The European Chamber South China Chapter Launches Business Confidence Survey 2022

Shenzhen, 24th June 2022 – The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China’s South China Chapter today presented the results of the Business Confidence Survey 2022 (BCS), conducted in partnership with Roland Berger. The survey highlights that while a majority (58%) of members view the development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) positively, doing business in South China is still challenging.

Key challenges for businesses operating in the region include accessing credit or funding (a challenge for 33%), gaining construction permits (45%), making cross-border capital transfers (56%), relocating their operations in the region (37%), trading across borders (42%) and enforcing contracts (45%).

In order to overcome these challenges, and to ensure that South China reaches its full potential, members of the South China Chapter outlined the areas that could be improved:

-          55% report that further collaboration between Guangdong’s various provincial government departments is needed.

-          40% believe local policies and regulations need to be more effectively implemented.

-          32% believe greater government transparency is needed.

Other recommendations to improve the business environment include the following:

-          40% report the need for increased access to policy information in English.

-          34% report the need for increased consultation between the government and industry.

-          37% report the need for streamlined visa processes for foreign nationals.

"South China has been a significant growth engine for China over the past forty years, and the Chamber is confident the region can continue to be so for many more decades, particularly as plans for the GBA slowly come to fruition,” said Klaus Zenkel, vice president of the European Chamber of Commerce in China and chair of the Chamber’s South China Chapter. “However, more practical measures and increased policy transparency are needed to ensure that it reaches its full potential.”

"Under the impact of the current epidemic, enterprises need to be more agile and always be ready to move on any potential occasion,” said Jeff Yu, Global Partner of Roland Berger.
